Introduced in 2001, the .NAME top-level domain extension is the single TLD intended for personal websites only. These domains can include personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other designations people are famous by. At first, only third-level registrations were possible, so if you wished to secure john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already taken 3rd-level domains remained working.
